Hofstra University

Hofstra University is a renowned private, non-profit, nonsectarian university located in the United States. Its main campus is found in Long Island New York. It is Long Island’s biggest private college that was founded in 1935 as an extension of the New York University. The school separated from the NYU system and got independence from Hofstra College in 1963 and gained university status. Comprising of 10 schools, among them a School of Medicine and a School of Law, it is noted for a series of Presidential conferences and being selected to host a United States Presidential Debate in 2008. It also hosted others in 2012 and 2016. It is the only university to do so in three consecutive times.

Campuses

The Arboretum and Bird Sanctuary of Hofstra University are endowed with a collection of diverse trees and an array of rare as well as colorful tulips in the spring. There are 3361 faculty members including over 2200 in the school of medicine, 6833 undergraduates adding up to more than 10,870 students overall. The campus has around 113 buildings on its 240 acres. Its campus located south of Hempstead Turnpike and west of California Avenue is found in the Village of Hempstead. The campus north of Hempstead is located in Uniondale. The New Opportunities at Hofstra is designed for students whose academic progress has been restricted by inadequate educational opportunities or their economic status.

According to the prestigious Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, this university is considered among the best university in the United States. In 2011, the university admitted the first class of students in its Hofstra Northwest School of Medicine. In the year 2012, it launched its School of Engineering and Applied Science. These featured programs that partner with local industry leaders and its School of Health Sciences which housed a new Master of public health course.

Athletics and Mascots

Hofstra University teams once had the nickname of the “Flying Dutchmen.” Later, the school’s official team name changed to “The Pride” in the year 2004. The name referred to a pair of lions that became the school’s athletic mascots in the 1980s. “The Pride” nickname, evolved to”Hofstra Pride” on- and off-campus campaign, that started in 1987. That was during the university’s dramatic upturn and growth. It is currently competing with the best universities in the United States especially after hosting the US Presidential debate in 2016.
