The American University of Sharjah is a co-educational center of higher learning located in the United Arab Emirates. The university was started in 1997 by Sheikh Muhammad Al-Qasimi, a member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah. The Sheikh envisaged the University as a distinguished educational center in the Persian Gulf region. It is located in University City in Sharjah, College and is a not-for-profit institution of higher learning formed on the education model of American higher. It is a quite a diverse university which brings together over 6000 students from over 99 countries. It has a full-time faculty of over 370. AUS has 26 majors and 46 minors at undergraduate and 14 master’s degrees in the College of Architecture, the College of Arts, Sciences, Art and Design, the College of Engineering and the School of Business Administration.
The ASU is licensed by the Commission for Academic Accreditation in the United Arab Emirates, which governs all undergraduate and graduate courses. The American University of Sharjah is also accredited in the US by the Commission on Higher Education by the Middle States Association of Schools and Colleges. Its College of Engineering offers Bachelor of Science degree courses in chemical engineering, computer engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering as well as mechanical engineering which are accredited by the ABET’s Engineering Accreditation Commission. The Bachelor of Science degree course in computer science offered in the College of Engineering is also accredited by the ABET’s Computing Accreditation Commission.
In 2012, AUS was ranked among the world’s top 450 universities by the distinguished London-based Quacquarelli Symonds, the world’s most trusted firm in university rankings. Out of more than 2500 global universities considered by the QS in 2013, the AUS was placed in the top 2170 bracket, a high climb from the previous year. AUS was also in the top 411 in 2016 hence becoming the best university in UAE.The University’s Management Information Systems course, which is offered in the School of Business Administration, was placed in the top 100 institutions in information systems research efficiency. Forbes Middle East currently ranks the American University of Sharjah as the leading private university in the greater Persian Gulf region which offers MBA degrees. The distinguished university was also ranked the 122nd best school in BRICS, emerging economics and 8th in the Arab region.
