Review of United Arab Emirates University
United Arab Emirates University, the oldest institution of higher learning in United Arab Emirates was opened in 1976, immediately after independence by the then president and the UAE’s founding father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. It is the oldest of the three public institutions of higher learning in the United Arab Emirates. The other two universities are the Higher Colleges of Technology and the Zayed University. The school is situated in Al Ain, United Arab Emirates. It is an accredited research-oriented institution. Its alumni have given the United Arab Emirates ministers, diplomats, top government officials and business moguls.
The UAEU is continuously rated as the top university in the UAE and the 4th in the GCC. It is ranked as the 6th in the Arab zone, the 338th and 370th globally in QS World University Rankings 2013. The 2012 QS World University Rankings positioned UAEU in the Top 50 under 50. The list involved the top 50 world universities that were opened in the past 50 years where it ranked number 48. In the Top 50 under 50 rankings, just eight universities in the world which are younger than UAEU are ranked above it. In its position as a leading business school, UAEU was named as the third best business university in Africa and the Middle East in the QS Global 200 Business Schools Report of2010. As a research university, the UAEU is currently ranked as number one among the GCC countries, second in the Arab World and 9th in the Muslim world. It was rated as the 86th university in Asia by the Times higher education.
Among the notable alumni of the UAEU are; Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the minister of presidential affairs and the deputy prime minister of UAE, Saif bin Zayed, UAE’s minister of interior and the deputy prime minister. Others are Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE’s minister of foreign affairs and Hamdan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, the current UAE’s Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research. Other notable alumni of the UAEU are; Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the former minister of foreign affairs of the UA E and former deputy prime minister, Ahmed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, a former MD of Abu Dhabi Investment Authority. Hamdan was regarded as the 27th most powerful individual in the world by Forbes in the year 2009 just before his death
