Review of University of Sharjah
The University of Sharjah is a private university situated in University City in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates. It was opened in 1997 by Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohamed Al-Qasimi, the ruler of Sharjah to boost the Emirate of Sharjah’s level of education. The university mission is becoming a leading academic hub in the Middle East and the entire world. Besides its main campus in Sharjah City, it has campus facilities to offer education and training courses directly to various communities all over the emirate. Most importantly, the university performs a crucial role in the socio-economic advancement of the Sharjah emirate. Its main campus is located on the southern end of Sharjah in the University City, a near the Sharjah International Airport. The University extends its services in its five branches situated in different areas in the Sharjah emirate including Khor Fakkan, Meleha, Dibba Al-Hisn and Kalba.
The University of Sharjah was named as the 551st best university by the highly-respected QS ranking firm. In the Webometrics ranking of universities, the school is ranked 6th in the UAE and 3821th globally in 2014. It was also ranked 4th in the United Arab Emirates by the SCImago Institutions in 2013, 149th regionally and 2345th worldwide. The 2013 University Ranking by Academic Performance considered it to be 3rd nationally and 1753th worldwide. In 2013, it was also ranked fifth in the UAE by four International Colleges and Universities search engine.
The university offers the highest number of accredited courses in the United Arab Emirates. It offers a total of 80-degree programs among them 51 bachelor’s degrees, four Ph.D. degrees, 15 master’s degrees, and nine associate diploma courses. It is duly licensed, and all its courses are accredited by the Commission on Academic Accreditation of the Department of Higher Education of the United Arab Emirates.
Its courses offered by the College of Engineering which includes civil engineering, electrical engineering, computer engineering and industrial engineering are all accredited by the American Board for Engineering and Technology. The organizing committee of the International Conference on Quality Assurance and Academic Accreditation, which was held in Portland, Oregon in April 2013, requested permission from the school to present a report. The report was prepared by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology on the Industrial Engineering course offered by its College of Engineering at the distinguished institution.
